Echuca

Echuca, Victoria is located on the Murray River, just beyond where the mighty Murray joins the Goulburn and Campaspe Rivers. This junction gave rise to the name Echuca, an Aboriginal name meaning 'meeting of the waters'. Echuca, Australia is part of twin towns – Echuca on the Victorian side of the Murray and Moama on the NSW side of the Murray.

You'll never forget the warm sunny days, the gently flowing Murray River and the sound of a paddle steamer making its way up the river. These will form part of the memories of your Australian Echuca vacation.

Echuca's map location as the closest point on the Murray to Melbourne cemented its place in history as a thriving inland port. Back in the 1800's road and rail transport was difficult and farmers relied on a fleet of paddle steamers to bring their wool and wheat to the Melbourne, Victoria market.

As rail made inroads throughout Victoria, the Echuca –Moama paddle steamers reign ended until the 1970s, when Echuca-Moama rediscovered its heritage.

The Port of Echuca is home to the original redgum wharf built in 1865. You can take an Echuca river cruise on a fully-restored steam paddle steamer, explore the museum and visit an old sly grog shop complete with escape tunnel.

The area is also the centre of some exceptional vineyards due to its Mediterranean weather. Echuca accommodation is extremely diverse. You can stay on a paddle steamer or houseboat and gently cruise up the Murray, or choose one of many other options.
